Satoko
Hasegawa
International Studies, Journalism Major
Asian Studies Minor
Hometown: Tsukuba, Ibaraki, JapanBackground
Growing up in Japan, Satoko wanted an alternative to attending college in
her country. So, she looked into studying abroad.
"I was attracted to enrolling in an American college, because I thought it would
be a nice way of learning something beneficial while learning English," Satoko
said.
Why IUP
Out of the ten American universities to which she applied, IUP was the first
to respond to Satoko.
"Since I needed to take care of all kinds of things like a student visa and air
ticket, IUP really helped me by responding so quickly."
The support she received from IUP eased Satoko's transition from a high school
student in Japan to a college student in the U.S.
School Stuff
Originally, Satoko enrolled as an International Studies major. After
reading books written by a woman who lived in both Japan and America, Satoko was
inspired to join IUP's Journalism Department. There she has the support of
professors who know her by name and are very understanding of the challenges
that international students sometimes face.
Things You Do
Satoko is a member of the Japanese Student Association at IUP. This network
acts as a support group for Japanese students studying at IUP and provides
information for potential students. While JAPASO is an organization qualified
to give information about applications, housing, and programs of study, the
group also maintains a social function helping students adjust to their new
environment.
You can visit the JAPASO website at

Around Here
Enjoying opportunities to express herself creatively, Satoko learned how to
use graphic design software. She is currently interning at the
Indiana
Regional Medical Center public relations department as a graphic designer.
Through building websites and making publications, Satoko is able to combine her
interest in art with her skills as a journalist. |
