Journalism Major
Sociology Minor
Hometown: Marion Center, PennsylvaniaBackground
Growing up so close to Indiana, I've always known about IUP. My dad and my
brother graduated from here, along with numerous friends and acquaintances. IUP
has always been like the next step after high school.
Why IUP
To be honest, I was never excited about going to college, but I'm happy to
be at IUP. I am really lucky to have such a good school practically in my
backyard. Don't discount it just because it's local.
I chose to stay here because of the close interaction with professors, the
variety of courses, and the
quality of the education I'm receiving.
School Stuff
IUP has an emphasis on liberal studies, which means you take a broad range
of classes even if they don't directly pertain to your major. That's how I got
interested in Sociology and chose to minor in it. The flexibility of the
program was important in helping me choose a major. I was an undeclared major
for three semesters, but there were advisers and professors who
were more than willing to answer my questions and help me find my way.
Things You Do
I've worked on campus as a graphic designer since the summer after I
graduated from high school. I wasn't even taking classes yet. Work-Study jobs
are great. You don't have to work off-campus, the employers are great
about scheduling your hours around classes, and you get to network with a lot of
faculty members and administrators while getting practical experience.
I also have a voluntary position as the publicity director for the
Indiana
Players, Inc., Indiana's
community theater group. I publicize the shows and activities of the
organization, which allows me to combine my journalism and design skills for a
cause I'm interested in.
Around Here
I commute from home to IUP. I love that I didn't have to choose between my
family and school. Now the people that I work with, the friends that I've made,
and the instructors I've gotten to know are like family, too. I also have the
best view on campus. My office window looks out at the Oak Grove giving the
feeling of being in a tree house surrounded by squirrels. |
